LA MESA -- Property crimes in La Mesa are dropping, but the much-discussed increase of robberies has La Mesa's violent crime rate rising.

The fourth quarter crime statistics will note a 23 percent year over year increase in violent crime led by an increase in robberies. There were 68 robberies in 2010 and 93 in 2011.

The Police Department's crime stats also notes that the 10-year average for robberies in La Mesa is 94 per year.  Police solved 35 of the 93 robberies in 2011.

Property crimes, however, declined markedly, from 2025 in 2010 to 1,533 in 2011. That decline was led by a 43 percent reduction in vehicle burglaries, a problem that had caused property crimes to spike markedly the previous year, and a 16 percent reduction in auto thefts.
